Fake it till you make it?

I was sort of dead because I’m now finishing high school and enrolling university very soon, but I won’t bother you about that. Instead, I want to open a topic that seems to bug some cosplayers including myself – cosplaying a character you don’t even know. What does this mean? Well:
1) That the cosplayer didn’t watch the anime/played the game/read the book/etc.. – meaning they don’t know how that character acts.
2) Cosplaying a character most likely only because it’s popular.
3) Trying to change the said characters personality and habits (this goes like 1)
-When can this work and when can it not?
It can work when:
-It’s a group cosplay and you get offered that character. Though it would still be neat if you could sit down and watch the anime/movie/play the game/etc to just learn about that character (aka decide whether you will even cosplay them or not)
It can’t work when:
-You just want to show off
-You think it’s cool
-You only like the design, but not the character themselves
-You didn’t watch the anime/movie/play the game/etc It’s just, sometimes you see people who dress up like, for example, Hit Girl from Kick Ass (I love the movie and she’s on my to-do list; watched both movies!) and you approach them all hyped about the character, but then you find out that they don’t even know who the hell she is or anything about her! It somehow offends those who cosplayed the character that they love and care about.

So please, don’t do a character that you don’t even like or know.

Enrolling into university is a big deal! How did it go? Did you get the scholarship somewhere?

@Demons : I like the idea of some fashion combinations that were inspired by a character! but yeah, as for cosplay, it's something on another page :3

Demons ,
I've been guilty of seeing a character and liking it's design while not knowing anything about it but since I don't really do cosplay I usually just steal some elements of their wardrobe and incorporate it into my own, but even if I did cosplay someone I would take the time to get to know the character a bit better :)

@Jazzy : ayy! hell yeah! I love Night Bitch! I think that height doesn't matter at all :3 @Catwhisperer : the problem is that those people, don't learn the lesson and just keep on doing the same thing :c @Scarlett : yea that's true! but sometimes people would value that person who's doing a character that they don't even know more than any of us! that's when things became really meh for yourself

Scarlett ,
I would agree with Catwhisperer. It all comes down to motivation :) You kids do as best as you possibly can with your costumes and pay no attention to things that do not concern you.... You might not feel it now, but all that unnecessary stress you create for yourselves over other peoples behavior will come with the vengeance soon enough... Just ignore it, don't make that kind off thinking a habit :D

Catwhisperer ,
Let me throw in my two cents in this pot :D You guys spend a lot of money and more valuable passion and time to bring the characters you love to life. And that is beyond admirable! But, there are people who would spend a lot of money, time and passion on being cool and looking good. There is a difference in motivation and that is all :D Just tell them they are super cool and that it would be so much cooler and better looking if they cosplayed a character they loved. :D They will appear as a character they like next time and nobody will be irritated in the process :D

If HitGirl is on your to do list, we should have a collaboration talk :D I wanted to cosplay Night Bitch for so long :D I guess I will be the shortest Night Bitch ever :D

@Jazzy : yes I totally agree on that! that way if you like that character you are all gonna have much more fun! @Lambequine : it does a lot @Feline : yes! tho I'm not sure when or will that even change...

As they should be! Do you have any idea how much time, money and energy they spend making a costume and bringing a character to life?! So it is hurtful when you get a disrespecting poser that pretends to cosplay...

You guys are so serious about fancy dress conventions :D Well, I guess that gives you joy :D

I can't even count how many times I was offered to cosplay some anime character I know nothing about because I'm short and chibi like :D I always say no, it would be hard to force myself to watch something I do not enjoy just so I can do that character justice. Cosplay should be done for fun and love, not coolness factor...

I honestly can't even imagine why people would even do this! What do they get out of it? Sure, if you are not an enthusiast but you are going to a fancy dress party or something, pick whatever looks best to you and don't give it a second thought, but if you are going to attend a convention or something where you're gonna have a bunch of true fans and people who put serious effort into bringing their favorite characters to life. it's just not right. Disrespectful even.
